Watch out for

Powdery mildew: Improve air circulation and apply a systemic fungicide if severe.

Slugs and snails: Use iron phosphate pellets or beer traps around the base of the plant.

Vine weevil: Apply systemic insecticide drench to soil in early autumn.

Bud blast: Plant in a sheltered location away from late spring frosts.

Leaf scorch: Mulch well and water deeply during dry spells.
