Watch out for

Root rot: Ensure excellent drainage by planting in gritty soil and avoid overwatering, especially in winter.

Slugs and snails: Use slug pellets, beer traps, or copper tape barriers to protect emerging growth in spring.

Vine weevil: Apply nematodes to the soil in autumn and spring or use systemic insecticides if infestation is severe.

Powdery mildew: Improve air circulation by spacing plants adequately and avoid wetting foliage when watering.

Winter damage: Plant in a sheltered, sunny spot with free-draining soil and avoid disturbing the crown in winter.
