Growing Rebutia arenacea in the UK
Rebutia arenacea is a small cactus best kept in a bright, well-ventilated and frost-free position in the UK. Use a gritty cactus compost in a pot with drainage holes, avoiding heavy garden soil. This care follows general RHS Rebutia guidance; specific cultivation details should be checked against the plant's identity.
Watering and resting
Water moderately while the cactus is actively growing and allow excess water to leave the pot. Reduce water substantially during cool or dormant periods; leaving the root zone wet is a greater risk than a dry interval in winter. Strong light and good ventilation help keep growth compact.
Flowers, offsets and problems
Rebutias are often grown for their conspicuous flowers. Some can be increased by seed or by separating offsets when available. Routine pruning is unnecessary. Check for mealybugs and signs of rot, particularly if the plant has been kept too wet.

Pests and Diseases
| Problem | Symptoms | Management |
|---|---|---|
| Mealybugs | White, cottony wax masses appear in stem crevices and around the base. | Isolate the plant and treat with a systemic insecticide or dab spots with alcohol. |
| Root rot | Stem becomes soft, shrivelled, and discoloured brown or black at the base. | Ensure sharp drainage and keep completely dry during winter dormancy. |
| Vine weevil | Semi-circular notches on leaf margins (if present) and root damage causing collapse. | Use nematode treatments in soil or systemic insecticides for prevention. |
| Scale insects | Small, immobile brown or white bumps attached firmly to the stem surface. | Scrape off manually or apply a horticultural oil spray during active growth. |
| Sunburn | Bleached, yellow, or scorched patches on the upper side of the stem. | Acclimatise gradually to full sun and avoid intense midday exposure initially. |
