How to Get Rid of Plantain in Lawns
Greater plantain (Plantago major) and its relative ribwort plantain are among the most familiar lawn weeds in the UK. They form flat rosettes that hug the ground, shrug off the mower, and thrive on compacted, worn or poorly drained turf. Plantain is rarely a problem in a vigorous, well-kept lawn — it moves in where the grass is weak — so lasting control is as much about lawn health as about removing the weed. This guide covers both.
How to identify it
Greater plantain forms a rosette of broad, oval, strongly ribbed leaves pressed flat to the ground, with short stalks of tiny greenish flowers on slender spikes in summer. Ribwort plantain has narrower, lance-shaped leaves and shorter, bullet-like flower heads. Both have a tough, fibrous root system and a central crown that sits at soil level, below mower height.
How to get rid of plantain
Dig or pull out the crown. For a few plants, lever each one out with a hand fork or an old kitchen knife, getting under the crown to lift the whole rosette and its roots. The flat rosette pulls up cleanly when the soil is moist. This is the simplest method for light infestations.
Improve the lawn. Plantain colonises compacted and bare ground, so the long-term fix is a healthier sward: spike or aerate to relieve compaction, top-dress and overseed thin patches, and mow at a slightly higher setting so the grass shades out low-growing rosettes. A dense lawn leaves no room for it to establish.
Selective lawn weedkiller. For widespread plantain in turf, a selective lawn weedkiller (with active ingredients such as 2,4-D, MCPA or dicamba) kills broadleaf weeds without harming grass. Apply to actively growing weeds in late spring or early summer, following the label; a second treatment may be needed for established rosettes.
Don't rely on mowing. Because the rosette sits below the blades, mowing alone will not kill plantain — it simply removes the flower spikes, which at least limits seeding.
Stopping it coming back
Keep the lawn dense and the soil uncompacted. Overseed bare patches promptly, feed the grass in spring and autumn, and avoid scalping the turf in dry spells. Removing flower spikes before they set seed reduces the number of new seedlings finding their way into thin areas.
When to call a professional
Plantain control is a routine garden task. A lawn-care service is only worth considering if the whole lawn is so worn and weed-ridden that it needs renovation — scarifying, aerating and reseeding — rather than spot weeding.
