Euphorbia horrida, commonly called the African milk barrel, is a slow-growing South African succulent valued for its blue-grey, deeply ribbed stems and formidable paired spines. Current taxonomy treats Euphorbia horrida as a synonym of the accepted name Euphorbia polygona. In the UK, plants sold under the familiar E. horrida name are best grown as frost-free container specimens in a bright conservatory, greenhouse or sunny indoor position.

Overview

The name Euphorbia horrida remains widely used by succulent growers and nurseries, but Kew's Plants of the World Online places it in synonymy under the accepted species Euphorbia polygona. Both names may therefore appear on labels and in older books. Retaining the nursery label is useful, but the accepted-name relationship should be recorded when cataloguing a plant.

The plant belongs to a variable group of succulent spurges native to South Africa's Cape region. Its swollen, water-storing stem and short-lived leaves reduce moisture loss in dry habitats. It begins as a barrel-shaped or short columnar plant, becoming taller with age and often producing offsets from the base. A mature specimen can form an imposing clump, although growth remains measured in a pot and is generally slower under UK light levels than in southern Africa.

The common name African milk barrel refers both to its shape and to the milky latex typical of euphorbias. This cactus-like plant is not a cactus. The latex is an important handling hazard: it can irritate skin and can cause serious injury if it reaches the eyes. Wear waterproof gloves and eye protection whenever repotting, cutting or propagating the plant. Keep damaged specimens away from children and pets, and clean tools and work surfaces carefully afterwards.

In most of the UK, this is a plant for life under glass rather than a permanent outdoor succulent bed. A pot can stand outside in a warm, sheltered position during settled summer weather, but it should return under cover before autumn nights become cold and wet. Its combination of architectural form, modest pot size and slow growth makes it well suited to a specialist succulent collection.

Appearance

The stout stem is blue-green, grey-green or sometimes almost chalky. Pronounced vertical ribs have noticeably wavy margins, creating alternating ridges and hollows that catch the light. Individual plants differ in stem colour, rib number, spine density and mature proportions. The pale surface and contrasting dark armature create the sculptural appearance for which plants under the E. horrida name are grown.

What look like cactus spines are persistent, hardened flower stalks. They occur in pairs along the rib edges and may be grey, brown, reddish or nearly black, fading as they age. Tiny leaves can appear briefly on fresh growth but are soon shed and make little contribution to the overall outline. These features help distinguish a healthy plant's natural variability from changes caused by poor care.

The flowers are small cyathia, the specialised flower structures found in the spurge family. They appear around the crown and are modest beside the substantial stems and spines. Flowering is most likely when a mature plant receives abundant light and a distinct drier winter rest. Seed production may require compatible flowering plants and successful pollination, so it should not be expected from every indoor specimen.

Offsets arise near the base and gradually turn a solitary barrel into a clustered plant. Older stems may elongate and lean as the clump develops. Dry, firm corking can form around the base as tissues age; this is usually harmless. Soft, dark or spreading discolouration is different and may indicate rot.

Growing Conditions

Very bright light is essential for compact, well-coloured growth. A sunny conservatory, frost-free greenhouse or bright south- or west-facing indoor position is suitable. Plants kept in weak light may narrow at the crown, stretch and lose their balanced barrel form. Rotate an indoor pot occasionally if growth leans strongly towards the window, while handling it carefully to avoid the spines.

A specimen moved abruptly from winter shelter into intense spring sunshine may scorch. Increase exposure over a week or two, using light shade at first, particularly after a winter behind glass. Good airflow is valuable in a greenhouse, but avoid cold draughts and do not crowd the stem against cold glazing. Water trapped around the crown or between offsets increases the risk of local decay.

Drainage is the central growing requirement. Use cactus and succulent compost with a substantial proportion of coarse horticultural grit, pumice or another clean mineral ingredient if the mix otherwise holds water for too long. The container must have unobstructed drainage holes. Empty a decorative outer pot promptly after watering. Terracotta suits established plants because it encourages evaporation and its weight helps steady a top-heavy, spiny specimen.

During active growth in spring and summer, water thoroughly enough to moisten the root ball, then allow the compost to dry well before watering again. Checking the compost is safer than following a fixed weekly schedule because drying time varies with light, warmth, pot material and root volume. Never leave the roots standing in water. Reduce watering markedly as growth slows in autumn and keep the compost much drier during winter. A warmer plant may need an occasional small drink if it becomes noticeably shrivelled, but cold, wet compost is a particularly dangerous combination.

Planting and Care

Repot in spring, usually from March to May, when roots have filled the container, compost has deteriorated or the plant has become unstable. Choose a pot only one size larger because unused compost remains wet for longer. Wrap the plant loosely in several layers of folded newspaper or use purpose-made succulent tongs rather than gripping the spines. Wear gloves and eye protection, and support the root ball while keeping the stem upright.

Remove loose, exhausted compost without unnecessarily breaking healthy roots. Set the plant at its previous depth; burying the lower stem encourages decay. If roots are torn or an offset is removed, allow the wounds to dry before watering. Keep a freshly potted plant dry for several days, then resume watering cautiously once the roots have had time to settle.

Feed sparingly. Apply a dilute cactus fertiliser occasionally from late spring to late summer, and only when the compost is already moist and the plant is actively growing. Do not feed a sick specimen or one resting in winter. Excess nitrogen and frequent feeding can produce weak, overly lush growth that is uncharacteristic of this naturally slow succulent.

Pruning is rarely required. Remove only dead, badly damaged or rotting tissue with a clean, sharp blade, protecting skin and eyes from latex. Blot sap with disposable paper, dispose of it safely and allow the cut to dry. Do not prune merely to impose a regular outline; ribs, offsets and gradual elongation are part of the plant's natural character.

Propagation is possible from seed or offsets. Seed offers genetic variation but may be slow and difficult to obtain. To propagate an offset, detach a sufficiently developed shoot with a sterile blade during active growth. Blot away latex without touching it, then leave the cut surface in a dry, ventilated place until a firm callus forms. Place the offset in dry, very free-draining medium and introduce water cautiously after rooting begins. Moist compost before roots develop commonly leads to rot.

Seasonal care follows the cycle of light and growth. From March, inspect the roots, repot if required and increase watering gradually. Through June, July and August, maintain strong light, ventilation and a soak-then-dry watering pattern. If the pot spends summer outside, check it after heavy rain and prevent water collecting in a saucer. During September and October, move it under cover before conditions deteriorate and reduce water as growth slows. In the darkest winter months, keep the plant bright, dry and protected from cold draughts, checking periodically for pests concealed between the ribs.

Common Problems

Root and stem rot are the most serious problems. Early signs include softness, dark or translucent tissue, an unstable base and an unpleasant smell from the compost. Persistent moisture, blocked drainage, an oversized pot or watering heavily during cool winter conditions are common causes. Prevention is more dependable than treatment. If decay is localised, healthy tissue may sometimes be saved by cutting well above the affected area with a sterile blade, but the latex hazard and difficulty of rerooting a large stem make success uncertain.

Mealybugs gather in rib hollows, around the crown or below the compost among the roots. Look for white, waxy deposits, sticky residue and distorted new growth. Scale insects resemble fixed brown or grey bumps and can be overlooked against corky tissue. Isolate an affected plant, inspect neighbouring succulents and use a treatment labelled for the pest and growing situation, following the product directions. Repeat inspections because hidden insects and eggs may survive the first treatment.

Red spider mites may appear in hot, dry indoor air where ventilation is poor. Fine stippling, dull colour and delicate webbing are typical clues. Improve airflow, isolate the plant and choose an appropriate control; do not try to solve the problem by keeping the compost continually damp. Fungus gnats commonly indicate that the growing medium is remaining moist for too long, even though their larvae are not usually the primary threat to an established succulent.

Pale brown or bleached patches on the sunward side are usually scorch caused by a sudden increase in light. Damaged tissue will not turn green again, but new growth should remain sound once exposure is adjusted. A narrowed or elongated crown suggests insufficient light. Some winter shrivelling can reflect the dry resting regime, but severe or persistent collapse warrants a root inspection. Dry, firm basal corking can be normal; corking accompanied by spreading softness, darkening or collapse requires immediate attention.

Popular Varieties

No cultivars are documented for Euphorbia horrida in mainstream UK horticulture, and named cultivars are not commonly available. Plants are usually sold under the species name or under descriptive trade wording that does not establish a cultivar. Colour and spine density also change with age, season and growing conditions, so a distinctive sales photograph is not evidence of a stable named selection.

Names formerly presented as infraspecific varieties of E. horrida need taxonomic qualification. Euphorbia horrida var. major, E. horrida var. noorsveldensis and E. horrida var. striata are historical names now treated by Kew as synonyms under the accepted Euphorbia polygona, rather than three currently accepted varieties of E. horrida. The autonym E. horrida var. horrida likewise belongs to that historical classification and should not be presented as a separate modern cultivar.

Specialist collections may preserve these names on labels because they record a plant's provenance, an older taxonomic opinion or the name under which material entered cultivation. Such labels can be horticulturally useful, but they do not override the current accepted treatment. Buy from a specialist nursery that records provenance, retain the original label, and add the accepted name without erasing the plant's documented history. Whatever historical name accompanies a specimen, its core cultivation remains the same: very bright light, sharply drained compost, careful watering during active growth and a dry, frost-free winter position.
