Violet willow is a vigorous deciduous shrub or small tree valued for its glossy violet-purple young stems, silvery spring catkins and ability to thrive in moisture-retentive ground. Overview
Salix daphnoides belongs to the willow family, Salicaceae. It is native across parts of central and eastern Europe and extends into western Asia, typically occurring beside rivers and on other moist, disturbed ground. In Britain it is grown as an ornamental and is also naturalised in some northern European areas.
Its defining feature is the surface of the young shoots. Strong new stems mature to violet-purple or deep plum and develop a pale, bluish-white waxy coating, known botanically as a pruinose bloom. This combination produces an unusually luminous winter effect, particularly when stems are lit from behind or outlined by frost. The display is strongest on young wood, so gardeners commonly manage the plant as a coppiced stool or low pollard rather than allowing it to develop into a full-sized tree.
Violet willow also provides seasonal and ecological interest. Silvery catkins open in late winter or early spring, offering pollen and nectar to active bumblebees, solitary bees and hoverflies. Long, straight stems can be cut for floristry, while the flexible growth and tolerance of wind and periodic wetness suit exposed gardens, shelter planting, rain gardens and streamside sites. It grows rapidly, however, and is not a suitable choice for a confined border where regular pruning cannot be maintained.
Appearance
Left unpruned, violet willow forms a broad, vigorous shrub or small tree approximately 4–8 m high. Older branches develop grey, slightly fissured bark, while the younger growth remains upright, smooth and flexible. A hard-pruned specimen produces a dense fountain of stems, commonly 1–2 m long in a single growing season, from a low woody base or pollard head.
The one-year-old stems are the principal ornamental feature. Their underlying violet, purple or plum colour is overlaid by a powdery blue-white bloom. This natural wax should not be mistaken for mildew. Winter sun emphasises both the rich colour and the cooler bloom, and the effect is especially clear once the leaves have fallen. Reddish-brown buds lie close against the stems; some appear opposite or nearly opposite, an uncommon arrangement among willows and a useful identification characteristic.
Leaves are narrowly lance-shaped, generally 5–12 cm long, with finely toothed margins. They are glossy dark green above and glaucous blue-green beneath. The foliage emerges early in spring and forms a light, moving canopy before turning and falling in autumn.
The species is dioecious, meaning male and female catkins occur on separate plants. Male plants provide the familiar ornamental display: compact silvery-grey catkins expand to show conspicuous yellow stamens, usually during February and March, before or as the leaves emerge. Female catkins are greener and less showy. Nursery plants selected for catkins are consequently often male. Cutting all growth down each year prioritises stem colour but removes older flowering wood, so management determines the balance between winter shoots and spring catkins.
Growing Conditions
Full sun gives the best stem colour and the strongest waxy bloom, although very light shade is tolerated. Choose a position where low winter sunlight can pass across or behind the stems, ideally within sight of a window or path. The flexible shoots cope well with exposed and windy situations, and the species also tolerates urban conditions.
Violet willow accepts sandy, loamy and clay soils provided that they retain moisture without remaining permanently flooded. It is particularly well suited to damp garden ground, the upper margins of ponds, ditch banks, streamside planting and rain-garden zones that experience periodic wetness. It is not an aquatic plant and should not stand continuously in deep, stagnant water. Ordinary garden soil is satisfactory if it does not become severely parched during summer.
A mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil is suitable. Before planting into heavy clay, relieve compaction over a broad area rather than creating a small hole filled with loose compost, which can hold water like a sump. On light soils, incorporating well-rotted organic matter and maintaining an annual mulch helps conserve moisture. Avoid sites immediately beside small drains, fragile paving or restricted foundations: as with other vigorous willows, its growth and demand for water warrant sensible spacing from structures.

Planting and Care
Plant bare-root violet willow from October to March whenever the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged. Container-grown plants can be set out whenever soil is workable, but autumn and early spring reduce watering pressure. Dig a square hole wider than the root system, loosen compacted soil at the base and sides, and position the plant at the same depth at which it previously grew. Backfill with excavated soil, firm gently and water thoroughly. Apply 5–7 cm of composted bark, garden compost or well-rotted manure, leaving a clear collar around the stems.
Water regularly through the first growing season, soaking the root zone rather than sprinkling the surface. Newly planted specimens in spring may need close attention during dry spells. Once established, the plant tolerates brief dryness, but strong ornamental shoots develop best where moisture remains available. Renew the mulch in early spring to reduce evaporation and suppress competing weeds.
Feeding should support vigorous new wood without becoming excessive. On average soil, an annual top-dressing of garden compost is often sufficient. A general-purpose shrub fertiliser in early spring can benefit plants on poor ground. Coppiced specimens may receive a balanced or moderately nitrogen-rich feed after pruning, following the product rate; overfeeding can produce soft, poorly ripened growth.
Pruning depends on the intended form. For a large natural shrub or small tree, remove only dead, damaged, diseased or badly crossing wood in late winter. For maximum winter stem colour, coppice in February or March before buds break, cutting stems close to the established stool. A pollarded plant can be cut back to within 5–10 cm of its permanent framework. Many gardeners repeat this every one to three years. Use sharp tools, make clean cuts and remove weak congested shoots so the retained stems receive light.
Because catkins are carried on older growth, annual hard pruning sacrifices much of the spring display. To combine catkins with coloured stems, prune on a two-year rotation, cut alternate stems, or divide a group into sections managed in different years. The uncut wood can then flower while freshly pruned sections produce new winter shoots. Complete scheduled shrub pruning in February or March; there is no sowing event for this calendar class.
Seasonal care is straightforward. In spring, inspect the stool after pruning, feed if necessary and maintain mulch. Water young plants during dry weather from late spring through summer. In autumn, clear heavily diseased fallen foliage and check ties or stakes on tree-form specimens. During winter, harvest selected straight stems for arrangements without stripping the plant of all its display.
Propagation is easy from hardwood cuttings. Between late autumn and winter, take healthy, pencil-thick sections 20–30 cm long from mature current-season growth. Make the lower cut below a bud, keep each cutting correctly oriented, and insert roughly two-thirds of its length into a sheltered nursery bed or deep pot of free-draining medium. Firm and water it, then prevent the bed from drying out. Rooted plants can be lifted and transplanted during the following dormant season.
Common Problems
Violet willow is vigorous, but aphids can gather on soft spring shoots. Small populations usually cause only curled leaves or sticky honeydew and support useful predators such as hoverfly larvae, lacewings and birds. Where control is needed, dislodge colonies with water or remove badly affected shoot tips rather than applying broad-spectrum insecticide.
Willow leaf beetles and sawfly larvae may chew or skeletonise foliage during summer. Inspect leaf undersides and hand-pick larvae where practical. Even conspicuous damage is seldom fatal to an established coppiced plant, although repeated severe defoliation can reduce vigour. Scale insects occasionally colonise stems and should be checked when growth becomes unexpectedly weak.
Willow anthracnose or scab can produce brown to black leaf spots, shoot damage and premature leaf fall, particularly in damp weather. Remove badly affected material, collect fallen leaves and water at soil level to limit prolonged leaf wetness. Rust fungi may cause orange pustules late in the season; this is often cosmetic, but clearing infected fallen foliage helps reduce carry-over.
Honey fungus is a more serious concern in known infected ground. Warning signs include poor growth, branch dieback, white fungal sheets beneath bark and black, bootlace-like rhizomorphs. There is no simple curative treatment for an established woody plant, so remove infected material and seek current guidance before replanting. Bacterial watermark disease is chiefly associated with other willows and is considered uncommon on S. daphnoides; unexplained staining and dieback should nevertheless be assessed rather than diagnosed from one symptom.
Poor establishment is more often caused by an unsuitable water regime. Dry, compacted ground limits the vigorous shoots needed for colour, while continuous stagnant water can weaken roots. Suckers may arise around a coppiced stool but are generally manageable; remove unwanted shoots at their point of origin. Pollen from male catkins may also aggravate seasonal allergy symptoms in sensitive people.
Popular Varieties
Cultivar choice is limited compared with many ornamental willows, and plants are frequently offered simply as the species. This makes accurate nursery labelling important, especially where a male plant is wanted for showy catkins.
'Aglaia' is the best documented named selection in cultivation. It is a male clone associated with conspicuous silvery catkins and yellow stamens, alongside the characteristic purple, pruinose young stems. Its care and eventual vigour are broadly those of the species, so it benefits from the same coppicing or pollarding choices.
No further named cultivars can be recommended confidently from the available brief without risking invented or confused names. Some sellers use descriptive wording for colour or catkin form, but such labels should not be assumed to represent formally recognised cultivars.
